Los Angeles-based production house Bridge7 has acquired the rights for a sequel and TV adaptation of Slumdog Millionaire. The newly established company, led by producer Swati Shetty and veteran CAA agent Grant Kessman, secured the rights from UK-based Celador, the studio behind the Oscar-winning film, alongside Film4.
In a statement quoted by The Hollywood Reporter, Shetty and Kessman shared, “Some stories linger with us long after the credits roll, and Slumdog Millionaire is undoubtedly one of them. Its narrative transcends cultural and geographical boundaries, embodying the kind of tales we cherish — ones that merge entertainment with deeply human experiences.”
Released in 2008, Slumdog Millionaire, directed by Danny Boyle, is a compelling drama inspired by Vikas Swarup’s 2005 novel Q and A. The film tells the story of Jamal Malik (played by Dev Patel), an 18-year-old from the Juhu slums of Mumbai. As a contestant on Kaun Banega Crorepati, Jamal astonishes everyone by answering all the questions correctly, winning Rs1 crore and standing one step away from the Rs 2 crore grand prize.
Accused of cheating, Jamal narrates his life story to the police, revealing how his personal experiences uniquely equipped him with the answers.
Slumdog Millionaire marked Dev Patel’s debut in acting and showcased remarkable performances by Freida Pinto, Madhur Mittal, Anil Kapoor, and Irrfan Khan.
Slumdog Millionaire garnered extraordinary acclaim, sweeping eight Oscars at the 81st Academy Awards. The accolades included Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Original Score, and Best Sound Mixing.
