    Description

Welcome Our Store and Thank You for your Business.
I picked this up at the
    YAMHILL HISTORICAL SOCIETY AUCTION
    McMinnville, OR 9/23/2020
    I am adding
    that
so you know it came from a
    HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Non-profit that felt it was worth Processing and Selling.
    When I went to
    pickup
, I found it was a Huge Property, Many Buildings,
    Mostly
    arranged in a Museum Setting.
This is a restoration project just waiting to be done.  Some of the wood is bug
    eaton
but not so bad it can’t be restored.  There is another guy on eBay selling a Very well-done restoration,
    Id
    suggest
his if you want a Ready to display chair.  He also had a
    lot
    research
    done
and I shamelessly copied some of his stuff, sorry and thanks.
A stunning and rare portable military field dental chair from 1895 by the S.S. White Dental Manufacturing Company.
It is made of cast iron and steel poles that can be assembled and disassembled.
This chair helped revolutionize field dentistry by allowing a proper chair that was adjustable to fit patient's size, easy enough to carry and transport to different areas of the battlefield where it was needed most, then set up using standard parts in a reasonable amount of time. Prior to this time (think Civil War), army field dentistry was done in a dirty and brutal fashion in the mud or sitting against whatever was available, especially if a soldier suffered trauma to the face. The Army had dentist chairs, but these were so large that they had to be kept in garrison far from those who needed critical treatment could access.
By bringing this chair to the front, it allowed a more professional level of service to the patient, no doubt saving many lives from infection or blood loss.
    Indeed
having chairs such as these available are part of the motivation for the military to form the Dental Corps in 1911.
This chair was used by the U.S. Army in the First World War. It is shocking to imagine some of the terrible events that have unfolded in it by the troops fighting from the trenches and the heroism performed by Army dentists on men torn apart from the brutality of that war.
S.S. White was founded in 1844 in Philadelphia and is still in operation today producing dental equipment.
Also included is a recreated printout of the original patent from 1895 with the complete description of the chair and diagrams of
    it's
original design. US538407. As well as page 10 in the next paragraph.
To see a photo of this model chair in use during WW1, see the following link to an Army medical PDF on the history of the Army Dental Corps. The picture is on page 10.
