METROPOLIS - Music by Joe Brooks, Book & Lyrics by Dusty Hughes and Joe Brooks, Directed by Jerome Savary, starring Brian Blessed, Graham Bickley, Mary Lincoln, Jonathan Adams, Paul Keown, with Stifyn Parri, Program for production which opened on March 8, 1989 at London's Piccadilly Theatre, 11.6125 x 8.25-inch magazine-style PB program bound by 2 staples, 32 pp + full-page B&W ads on inside covers; very good-plus condition (clean, tightly bound, good corners, bright covers and pages;slight crinkling in spots at front and back covers).
Germany's Fritz Lang (later a major Hollywood director) co-wrote this screenplay with author Thea von Harbow and directed this jaw-dropping 1927 silent film which was 17 months in the making due to dazzling special f/x and futuristic sets inspired by Manhattan's art Deco skyscrapers. It was a pioneering film and only gained in stature as time passed. Per Roger Ebert, "(It's) one of the great achievements of the silent era, a work so audacious in its vision and so angry in its message that it is...more powerful today than when it was made." This 1989 stage musical was ambitious and generated corer support, but hasn't become a classic frequently revived. It's a great program filled with info and B&W photo about Lang's career, early movie sci-fi, expressionism in film, and the turbulent post-WW I 1920s.
